Meaning of Free-trade agreement

Free-trade agreement: a contractual arrangement between two or more countries under which they give each other preferential market access, usually called free trade. In practice, free-trade agreements tend to allow for all sorts of exceptions, many of them temporary, to cover sensitive products. In some cases, free trade is no more than a longer-term aim, or the agreement represents a form of managed trade liberalization. Observers have noted that many recent free-trade agreements have run to several hundred pages, whereas a true free-trade agreement would require only a few lines. See also customs union, free-trade area, regional integration arrangement and regional trade arrangement.
