Meaning of Treaty on Intellectual Property in Respect of Integrated Circuits

Treaty on Intellectual Property in Respect of Integrated Circuits: one of the treaties which contains the standards of protection to be applied under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. It was concluded in Washington, DC, on 26 May 1992 under WIPO auspices, but it is not yet in force. Each party must afford intellectual property protection to original lay-out designs of integrated circuits (topographies) whether or not the integrated circuit is incorporated in an article. Parties to the Treaty must also accord national treatment to natural persons and legal entities of all other parties. Protection of integrated circuits must be for at least eight years. As a minimum, the reproduction of the layout-design, and the import, sale or other distribution for commercial purposes of the lay-out design or its incorporation in an article must be deemed illegal if it is done without the authorization of the holder of the intellectual property rights. See also sui generis right.
