Bye in match-play tournaments, a free pass to the next round without having to compete (golf) bye the right to advance to the next round of a tournament without playing a match. Top-seeded players are often given byes in the first round. See seed (tennis) bye 1. Decision reached by a draw that an athlete (or a team) reaches the next round of a competition without having to compete. 2. Reaching the second round of a tournament in racquet games without having to compete against an opponent (e.G. In badminton, tennis, ping pong), this situation occurs when the number of competitors is less than 64, 32, 16, 8 or 4, i.E.
