Throw-in
Throw-in 1. An act of returning a football to play from the sideline by propelling it from behind the head with both hands 2. An act of returning a basketball to play by passing it onto the court (dict. Of sp. And ex. Sc. 2006, 209P.) Throw-in a method of putting the ball into play after it has gone out of bounds, after a score, a violation, or a personal foul for which no free throws are awarded, or at the beginning of a period, in some cases. The player making the throw-in has five seconds to pass the ball inbounds (basketball) throw-in a type of restart where a player throws the ball from behind his head with two hands while standing with both feet on the ground behind a sideline, taken by a player opposite the team that last touched the ball before it went out of bounds across a sideline (football) throw-in form of restarting a game in some ball games when the ball has been played across the sidelines. The right for a throw-in is always awarded to the team that did not touch the ball last. The manner in which the ball is thrown back into the playing field is regulated in the individual ball games.
