Meaning of Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa: COMESA. The treaty establishing COMESA was signed at Kampala on 5 November 1993. It is the successor to the Preferential Trade Area for Eastern and Southern African States (PTA). Its members are Angola, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The aims of COMESA are (a) to attain sustainable growth and development of member states by promoting a more balanced and harmonious development of its production and marketing structures, (b) to promote joint development in all fields of economic activity and the joint adoption of macro-economic policies and programs to raise the standard of its peoples and to foster closer relations among members states, (c) to cooperate in the creation of an enabling
