Special Preferential Sugar Agreements
Special Preferential Sugar Agreements: agreements in the form of an exchange of letters between the European Community as the importer, some of the ACP states and India in which the European Community allocates to them an annual special tariff quota for the import of raw cane sugar. The following ACP states are parties to this arrangement: Barbados, Belize, Republic of Congo, Fiji, Guyana, Côte d’Ivoire, Jamaica, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Suriname, St Kitts and Nevis, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. These agreements were first concluded for the years 1995 to 2001. They have been renewed for 2001 to 2006. Sugar quantities from the ACP states enjoying preferential access to the European Community are fixed annually in the light of import needs. For India the special tariff quota is 10,000 tonnes, again in the light of import needs, but it may be higher. The rate of duty within the special quota is zero.
