Meaning of engineering changes
Local design changes made to improve the design that are realized during the prototyping or production process that may or may not cause a "ripple effect" throughout the design because they require that each part of the design affected by the change be reexamined. In the early phases of a design project, engineering changes are handled fairly easily because the design is fluid, hardware is still remote, few people are involved, and constraints and interactions have not become tight. The cost of engineering changes in early stages of design is usually just the direct labor costs involved. In the later stages of the project, engineering changes become much more difficult and thus costly to handle.
