Meaning of functional correlation
A method of correlation first addressed in "An Overview of Correlation and Functional Dependencies in Cost Risk and Uncertainty Analysis, R. L. Coleman, S. S. Gupta, DoDCAS 1994". Functional correlation is achieved by linking the cells in a spreadsheet (risk model) so that the independent variables in a CER obtain their values from elsewhwere in the spreadsheet and coefficients obtain their distributions from the statistical analysis that produced the CER. This method preserves the relationships between the various parts of a model. This can best be seen by capturing the sequential values for any two variables from a Monte Carlo and graphing them as oordered pairs in a scatterplot. If functional correlation has been properly implemeted, a regression of the scatterplotted variables will reproduce the CER that links them. Functional correlation thus reproduces the relationship thatthe original data had, and accounts for such correlation as is known to exist. Relational correlation (q.v.) can be used where CERs are not known.
