Diversity Index A numerical expression of the evenness of distribution of aquatic organisms. Several different formulae are in current use for its calculation. One such formula for the diversity index is expressed as d = – I: ni/n log2 ni/n where the summation ranges from i=1 to s where ni is the number of individuals per taxon, n is the total number of individuals, and s is the total number of taxa in the sample of the community. Diversity index values range from zero, when all the organisms in the sample are the same, to some positive number, when some or all of the organisms in the sample are different.
