Light Energy Study Guide
1. Light travels in a straight line.
2. Light is a form of energy.
3. Without light, it is impossible to see.
4. Some items produce light, while others reflect light.
5. Some light producers are: sun, stars, fire, candle, light bulbs, and flashlight.
6. Light can be reflected by a mirror. That’s why you can see your image in it.
7. Some light reflectors are: moon, planets, metal, water, flashlight, and
mirror.
8. When light is bent, it is refracted.
9. White reflects light.
10. Black absorbs light.
11. Glass is transparent. Light can pass through it.
12. Wax paper is translucent. Some light passes through, some is reflected
and scattered.
13. A chair is opaque. Light is absorbed. It can’t pass through an opaque
item.
14. Light can be separated by a prism.
15. Prisms create rainbows by separating the light.
16. When light particles hit an uneven surface, they are scattered in
many directions.
17. In the electromagnetic spectrum, we can see the visible light.
18. We see white because all of the colors strike and are reflected.
19. We see black because all of the colors strike and are absorbed.
20. We see red because all of the colors strike, red is reflected, and the
rest are absorbed.
21. Leaves appear green because they reflect green.
22. The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second.
23. Light in air travels fast. Light in water travels more slowly.
24. When light slows down it changes direction or bends. This is called
refraction.
Light Definitions
1) absorption: taking in or swallowing up energy
2) angle of incidence: the angle at which
light strikes a surface
3) angle of reflection: the angle at which
light bounces off a surface
4) medium: any substance through which a
wave is transmitted
5) prism: a clear glass or plastic shape
that breaks light into the color spectrum
6) reflection: when rays of light or heat
are reflected, or bounce off other objects.
7) refraction: when light goes from one medium to another medium,
(from air to water) and is bent
Reflection Refraction
8) spectrum: the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, arranged in the order of their wavelengths and seen when light passes through a prism
